Are you an Empath?
13 Major signs you are a highly Sensitive Person
Empathy is our superpower. We all have the ability to connect to one another on a personal intimate level.
What is an Empath?
An empath is a highly sensitive person who absorbs the energy and emotions of those around them. Anything violent you find cringe worthy, this can offset your emotions sending you into a downward spiral. Being an empath sometimes can make you a natural healer. You may be called to work in health fields like nursing, animal medicine such as veterinary technologist, volunteering at animal shelters, and helping to feed the homeless. This proves that your sensitivity is a gift you want to put an end to the worlds suffering. Helping in anyway you can. Holistic professions also interest you such a Reki and crystal healing.
Living as a highly sensitive person can sometimes feel exhausting. Imagine being able to relate to anyone and everything only to never have that feeling returned back to you. At times this can leave you feeling lonely never having anyone to relate to how deeply you feel about things. I mean, yeah. It has its perks.
You know exactly how to comfort someone and when to leave someone alone when they are feeling down. You have the ability to pick up on every subtle movement or shift in energy deciphering exactly how a person is feeling. You bear the load of everyone around you; like a human dump ben people load you with their problems. And you listen intently without a desire to respond or tell them there feelings are wrong. In your eyes everyone is entitled to feel exactly as they wish, and you feel sympathy for them. Your sensitivity is so strong you can walk into a room after an argument and you just know something has transpired. Below I have compiled a list of 21 empathic traits. Lets see if you have any of these characteristics.
1.) Sensitivity to sound.
If you have ever laid in bed late at night tossing and turning because the hum of the refrigerator is to loud. This is a tell tell sign that you are a highly sensitive person. Your hearing is extremely sensitive even to small things like the air conditioning unit, the TV, even the microwave. I guess this means no blow drying for you.
2.) You are always tired. (Especially after interacting with groups of people.)
Are you constantly tired? Do you find that your eyes are heavy and that you yawn constantly throughout the day? The effects of other peoples energy drains you. I know, I know… this sounds crazy , but its true. You are absorbing the energy of everyone you interact with on a daily bases. Like a sponge in a sink full of water. By the end of the day you want nothing more than silence, even a break from your own thoughts and emotions. An hour a day alone can boost your energy levels. Walk away from the crowd even just for five minutes. Doing a few deep breathing exercises will also to help increase your energy levels.
3.) You never watch the news.
News stories will stick with you throughout the day. Images flash in your minds eye and before you know it your crying, because you are afraid of the ways of the world. You also find that most news stories are inauthentic lacking truth and integrity. You would rather enjoy your mornings watching something happy and inspiring, so the thought can linger in your mind all day. Starting your day on a positive note is very important to you.
4.)Animals are your friends.
Even as a child you have had a strong connection with animals. Bringing home every poor defenseless creature you could find. Animals find you no matter where you are. Say you are in a crowded room you find yourself paying more attention to the cat than the rest of the people in the room. In some cases you may have become vegan or vegetarian, because the thought of eating animals who were inhumanly slaughtered upset you.
5.) You suffer from mood swings
You try so very hard to keep your moods in check, but half the time you cant tell if the emotions are yours or someones near you. Which sucks for you. You may swing between five different feelings in one hour. You could go from laughing to crying in seconds. This sounds a bit crazy, but its no fault of your own. Try practicing mindfulness techniques to help with this.
6.) You walk into a room and feel the energy.
If you walk into a room where an argument transpired the energy of that argument is palpable. Sometimes you walk in and want nothing more than to turn a round and walk back out. You can feel sadness, happiness, excitement. All of those feelings swoop right into you. That is why it is important to cleanse yourself, and the space you will be in. A lot of places sell sage sprays that work wonderfully on the go.
7.) You Enjoy being alone.
Alone time is very important to you. You need time to decompress and release a lot of the pint up energy you have accumulated throughout the day. Most people thrive on conversation and human interaction, but not you. Most times you find yourself struggling to find the right words to say to someone. You can tell if a person is sad even when they are smiling. So most times you find mediocre conversations about the weather and politics a waste of time. You’d rather skip all the meaningless small talk and jump into the deep emotional side of a person. You already know everything they are feeling so why not talk about it.
8.) Anxiety is a normal occurrence for you
The Anxiety you are faced with is crippling. There are days you can’t leave your house. It comes from the clear blue sky without warning. Your world is in a downward spiral. Your heart threatens to beat out of your chest. You become Lightheaded; the world seems as if it is about to end. Your breaths are short and shallow. A feeling of nervousness creeps up your spine. You are completely debilitated. The thought of going anywhere or talking to anyone scares the shit out of you, and honestly you’d rather stay home cocooned in your safety net, because who knows what could happen out there today. This is one of the saddest hardest things about being an empath. Anxiety is an unbearable disease. I find that daily meditation and mindfulness helps a lot with these episodes.
9.) Being out in nature around plants and animals comfort you.
People call you a tree hugger, because you are a tree hugger. Being out in nature is one of your favorite things. You find peace and solitude in these places. Here your mind is quiet, and it is a great releasing process for you. Finally you do not have to be a sponge. Bringing the outdoors indoors is one of your things. Plants, animals, running water and sounds of nature are some of the things you invite into your space.
10.) The weather effects your moods
You can feel the rain coming. Your body begins to slow down, and your brain tells you its time for a nap. Like a bear preparing for the winter you body reacts to the weather surrounding it. I find that when the sun is shining; sitting high in the sky that is when I am most active. I feel creative, exuberant, and alive. When it is raining I find myself feeling melancholy. Needing candles and relaxing tunes as I sit pondering. The rain for me is a moment of cleansing and reflecting.
11.) You create a space that is specifically for you
You have a scared space that is specifically for you. Filled with all the things you love like crystals, incense, flowers, and candles. In this place you decompress. Reading books about living because for once you have the ability and willingness to jump into someones head via fictional stories or blog post like this.
12.) Music is your therapy
Listening to music is a sweet escape. You can feel the artist emotions behind each song. You get lost in he beat and the rhythm of the song. Like the universe whispering poetry in your ears. You probably enjoy soothing music filled with passion, emotion, and meaning.
13.) People tell you you are over sensitive
They say things like, “stop it, your being sensitive again.” or “you are very moody today.” and, “Why are you crying now.” Your sensitivity is a blessing. It makes you exactly who you are. Imagine how colorless life would be if you couldn’t feel things the way you do. The world needs more people like you. It makes you a healer and a lover, because your sensitivity allows room for compassion. Compassion for every living being on this planet. Even the things the world seems to ignore you notice. You find beauty in the plants they call weeds. To you everything is here for a reason and you just want to do your part and see peace and love for all sentinel beings.
